Each monster appears in a different section of the game, thus the enemies the player faces differ in each act and zone. Their respective special attacks are almost all exclusive to Nightmare or higher difficulties and also to rare and higher Variants
Variants
Every monster has different Variants, being normal, rare, elite, ancient and champion respectively. All of them can be identified by their healthbars. Enemies can have affixes and Elite and higher can have special abilities. Stronger variants also come with increased drop values, which vary with difficulty.
Additionally some Enemy-types can have a special active ability, which are specific to their class.
